One of the latest innovations for indoor plant lighting are compact fluorescent lamps (neon), the older sisters of low-consumer lamps that are used for lighting our homes; or, with the same operation, but with a much higher power. The operation of this lamp is very similar to that of the common fluorescence lamps, the gas contained within the small U-shaped tubes excited by the electric current emits light. This type of lamp, unlike incandescent lamps and traditional fluorescence lamps, has the built-in ignition system inside the lamp base and thus allows to directly connect the lamp to an E40 lamp holder (the same used for high pressure sodium lamps and metal hydurs); this thanks to the adaptation of producers to the market and the materials used by growers. Its main utility is to replace linear fluorescence lamps, but it reaches a significantly higher light intensity in a smaller space. As well as traditional fluorescents, these sources emit very little heat but produce many more lumens and have a greater depth of lighting, resulting so more effective to stimulate maturation. The low heat produced allows to approach the lamp to the plants (up to about 5 cm) without drying the substrate, or overheating the environment. Recommended to replace HPS lamps in the ripening phase of small plants.
